On February 27, 2009, the Law School will host its fifth Law, Knowledge & Imagination symposium titled, "Speech and Silence in American Law."
We will welcome experts from Georgetown, Yale, Northwestern and the University of California at Berkeley to examine the ever-evolving relationship between speech and silence in a post-9/11 world. Cambridge University Press will be publishing the papers in this symposium as well as those in our previous forum held in October titled, "Sovereignty, Emergency and Legality."

Paula C. Johnson, a Visiting Professor at the Law School who is teaching Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure, serves as co-director of the Cold Case Justice Initiative (CCJI). While she is visiting at UA Law, she is conducting investigations on unsolved racially motivated murder cases from the Civil Rights Era.
Supreme Court Justices Roberts and Thomas on Deck to Deliver Albritton Lectures
The Chief Justice of the United States, the Honorable John G. Roberts, has committed to present our Albritton Lecture in 2010. Justice Clarence Thomas will give this same lecture in fall 2009, which will mark the second time he has spoken to our law students. We are honored to welcome Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, of the Supreme Court of Canada, to the Law School where she will present the Albritton Lecture on March 9, 2009.

Cheryl Little, Executive Director of the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center, has been named the 2008 Morris Dees Justice Award Winner. The Selection Committee recognized Ms. Little, who is considered one of the country’s leading experts on immigration law, for her dedication to upholding the rights of immigrants throughout her professional career, which spans more than two decades.

Senator Shelby Announces $268,305 Federal Grant for UA Law’s Mediation Law Clinic more »
U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, today announced that the Department of Justice will award $268,305 to the University of Alabama School of Law. This grant is awarded through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, which helps local communities improve local justice systems.

The Law School is currently hosting 12 law students from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland for a six-week visit to our campus. They are visiting law firms, state courts, judges, and other points of interest; having lectures from the Alabama Law Faculty, and sitting in on classes. 10 UA Law students visited Fribourg earlier this summer.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2008 Morris Dees Justice Award, an honor jointly sponsored by Skadden Arps Meagher & Flom and the Law School. The award will be presented to a lawyer who has devoted himself or herself to justice and public service and whose work has brought about positive change in the community, state, or nation. THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT NOMINATIONS HAS PASSED. THE WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN SEPTEMBER 2008.
Judge Sam C. Pointer Endowed Scholarship more »
We were saddened to lose Judge Sam C. Pointer, Jr. ’57 earlier this year. Judge Pointer was a nationally respected former federal judge who was revered for his high respect of the law, tolerance of others, sharp intellect, and attention to detail. He will also be remembered for his expertise in handling cutting-edge, complex litigation. To honor the memory of Judge Pointer, his former firm of Lightfoot, Franklin & White, LLC and his former law clerks are establishing the Judge Sam C. Pointer Endowed Scholarship Fund. Current plans call for the scholarship to be awarded annually to the incoming editor-in-chief of the Alabama Law Review, to be applied to his or her third year of law school.

On July 11th, UA Law is hosting a Farrah Order of Jurisprudence/Order of the Coif Breakfast as well as our alumni reception during this year’s Alabama State Bar meeting in Destin. Alumni who are planning to attend the UA Law reception and Order of the Coif Members who are planning to attend the breakfast must pre-register through the Alabama Bar Association.
